Did you know that one in six transformers in the USA is designed and manufactured by Royal SMIT Transformers B.V.?
On Wednesday, 5th October 2022, Sterkstroomdispuut der ETV and master students from Electrical power engineering Delft University of Technology visited Royal SMIT, Nijmegen. We received a warm welcome into the company from Anna Meijer. After we got our safety gear, we met with the chief engineer Erik de Groot and R&D Manager Bart Simons.
Erik presented an informative session on Royal SMIT and its business, which covers several continents. In Nijmegen, the company focuses on large power transformers and other products like phase shifters and reactors. He also introduced us to the various aspects of designing these components.
Following up on this insightful presentation was Bart, with whom the students had an enthusiastic discussion about innovation in the design of transformers. Some of the topics researched by the R&D teams include cooling efficiency, biofuels that can replace transformer oil, noise reduction, etc.
The second half of the day was spent walking through the impressive factory and witnessing various levels of the transformer manufacturing process. The tour ended with a visit to their high-voltage facilities.
SSD would like to thank Royal SMIT and the students who accompanied us for their time and for making the trip a success.
